Video work that wants macOS, not a generic Linux shape.
Many media pipelines stall on cloud containers that lack VideoToolbox, struggle with Remotion Chromium on tiny vCPU shapes, or force you to operate your own Macs. Cost and wall-clock both show up in the 2026-07-22 bakeoff: Mac package electricity for a 3-minute Remotion job was about ~$0.00017 versus ~$0.0435 Cloudflare Containers rate-card for the same composition. Apple Silicon is the right execution environment for Mac-native media.
What the 2026-07-22 bakeoffs showed
- Cost + architecture compare: Mac elec vs CF rate-card dollars and Prefer guidance on one table.
- Remotion on M2 Max / M1 Air beat small Cloudflare Containers shapes on wall-clock for the compositions we ran.
- VideoToolbox encodes are a Mac-native advantage versus a 0.5 vCPU x264 container in that test (~$0.0474 CF-shape rate-card for 20 min x264).
- Package power on M2 Max Remotion was tens of watts; LongKinetic20m was about 5.4 Wh (~$0.001) absolute package energy. Electricity is not the pricing floor.
